Hans discussed his plans to convert his well-received Critical and Synoptic Edition of Ulysses into a searchable hypertexted ebook/webspace. Last semester I took a seminar class on James Joyce, and of course no class on Joyce would be complete without reading Ulysses. This is one of that handy things about the Gabler edition: he provides episode and line numbers on every page, which makes referring back to the text very easy. Students will select some portion of Ulysses with which to work, and then spend the week editing two versions of that portion, preparing them for collation and publication as scholarly digital editions. Stick with the Random House or Gabler texts for Ulysses. Watch out for knock offs of Ulysses and Finnegans Wake. Connections: Ulysses and Infinite Jest. The so-called “definitive” version of published by Hans Walter Gabler in 1986 has been utterly discredited, and no subsequent edition improves on the Random House version. There is a long history of textual criticism and genetic scholarship on which to base a versioned edition of Ulysses. My 1986 Bodley Head edition of the “Corrected” text, edited by Gabler, Steppe and Melchior, is a mere 9.5″ x 8″ x 1.75″–admittedly with small (but quite readable) type. This edition is Joyce's edited 1922 text.
